Timetabling

Children in Year 1 will begin school at 8.40am and finish at 3.15pm

How will we support the transition from EYFS?

It is our priority that your children begin their journey into Year 1 feeling safe and happy. I know for both parents and children, it feels like a big transition from EYFS and we work closely alongside the EYFS team to ensure that the transition is smooth and fills all the children with confidence to fly their kites!

The children will still be learning through play in many aspects of the day for the first few weeks or so but the day is more structured than it was in Reception.  We continue to learn in a variety of ways; at our tables, while moving, exploring outdoors, in groups, on the carpet, the ICT suite or in the Phizz lab

This will be their first year of the National Curriculum and while the children have left the EYFS Framework behind in reception, some goals may be carried on with them as they move into Year 1. We ensure that all children are secure in the Early Learning Goals before moving on to the Year 1 National Curriculum.

Rewards and Sanctions

We will continue with the ‘Class Dojo’ system that the children became familar with in EYFS, to reward children points for showing gospel values, contributing in lessons and working well with others.

Just like in Reception class, we use the Rainbow, Sun and Cloud behaviour system in Year 1. Each child will start every day on the Sun and will aim to be moved up to the Rainbow by demonstrating good behaviour. Should your child show unkind behaviour or fail to follow the school rules, they will be moved onto the Cloud and given a warning. If this behaviour continues they will be moved onto the Thunder Cloud, given a time out and parents will be informed.

Website

The Year 1 class page on the school website will celebrate the children’s learning with photographs. There will also be updates and information for parents on this page so please make sure you check the page regularly.

PE

Children will have PE on Wednesdays (Pupils come to school in PE Kit) and Fridays (Pupils to come into school in PE Kit -this will be reviewed during the year and may change, but we will keep you informed of any changes.).

Phonics Screening

In June, all children in Year 1 will sit their Phonics screening test. This will involve the children using the sounds they have learnt in phonics lessons to decode and read a range of real words and 'alien' words (made up words). The work we are doing in Read Write Inc. throughout the year will be preparing the children for their Phonics Screening Test. We will provide you with more information regarding this nearer the time.

Homework & Reading

At the start of September, your child will be sent home with a reading book and a reading record. It is essential that your child reads their book each night at home, as this will have a huge impact on their reading progress and chances of passing the phonics screening test at the end of the year. We will encourage children to change their reading book regularly, but it will be their responsibility to do this.

Every Friday, your child will bring home a set of words to learn to spell, ready for their spelling test the following week. The children will also have EBL research questions on Tuesdays. Additional maths homework will be given on Mondays where appropriate.
