Summer 2

Is a culture of care possible? - Rights and Responsibilities

Our question for this term of ‘Is a culture of care possible?’ will be explored through the Catholic Social Teaching lens of Rights and Responsibilities across the whole curriculum. In order to ensure the common good, we must protect human rights as well as meet our responsibility for the rights of others, the good of the individual, for the family and the wider community.

As part of our enquiry learning we will develop our historical skills through exploring a local history study of The Black Country. Children will build upon their prior knowledge of Key Stage One as they begin to address and devise historically valid questions about change, cause, similarity, difference and significance. We will explore what life was like in The Black Country and compare it to the present day. We will explore the impact the Industrial Revolution had on our local community and understand the roles and responsibilities people in the community had to undertake in order to work for the common good of all. Children will be able to construct historical responses and form opinions through using a variety of historical sources. ‘The common good calls for social peace, stability and security by a certain order which cannot be achieved without particular concern for distributive justice’ (Pope Francis, Laudato Si, Paragraph. 157).

Children will also be encouraged to share their own ideas or experiences throughout this, allowing them to build curious minds. Throughout this study we will be continually building upon our skills and knowledge. Therefore, our ‘golden nuggets’ of knowledge will be embedded in our long-term memories!
