Relationship & Sex Education (RSE)

Catholic schools, like all other schools in England, are required to produce a written policy following the guidance issued by the Department for Education on Relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education. 

Why is RSE in Catholic Schools important?

RSE is part of the mission of Catholic schools to educate the whole person. It should be carried out as part of the holistic education which seeks to form as well as inform young people in preparation for adult life.

What does outstanding RSE in Catholic school look like?

In order for Catholic RSE to be fully effective it needs to:

• Be faithful to the Church's vision of human wholeness whilst recognising the contemporary context in which we live today;
• Involve parents as they are primary educators of their child;
• Provide a positive view of human sexuality and dignity of the human person;
• Equip young people with the ability to make practical judgments about the right thing to do in particular circumstances;
• Explore and promote virtues which are essential to promoting respect and dignity;
• Be delivered in an age appropriate way which reflects the development of the child;
• Be part of the cross-curricular work in both primary and secondary schools;
• Be sensitive to the needs of the individual pupil and recognise the mix of pupils with different sexual orientations, genders and family backgrounds in each class;
• Be taken seriously by governors and teachers as an integrated part of the broad and balanced curriculum that Catholic schools offer;
• Be delivered by competent professionals who understand the Church's teaching.

During the Summer Term, we will be starting our new RSE Program, Life to the Full Scheme of Work.
 

Life to the Full, teaches the children that we are made in the image and likeness of God, and, as a consequence, gender and sexuality are God’s gift, reflect God’s beauty and share in divine creativity. By following the scheme, the children can grow and develop with a true understanding of their gender and its implications for successful relationships in life.

Today we celebrated the birthday of an extremely important man to all of us at OLSK!
Mr Johnson, our Chair of Governors, had his 70th birthday so we all wanted to show him how much we love him with our cards & cheers!

COVID has not gone away and we still have children who are testing positive.

The guidance from the government remains as follows:

• adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and they no longer have a high temperature
• children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can go back to school, college or childcare when they no longer have a high temperature, and they are well enough to attend
• adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice will be 3 days

Today we welcome our MP James Morris into school- he is meeting with our Caritas Ambassadors to talk about Social Justice, climate change& the refugee crisis, as part of our Catholic Social Teaching 🙏💕🙏 The children are very excited to speak with James about what the Government are doing to look after our world & more importantly, the people in it!
