We use Bug Club Guided to support the teaching of reading and develop pupils' comprehension skills.

Bug Club Guided is a high-quality, structured reading programme that provides engaging texts and carefully planned lessons to help children become confident, fluent readers. Through regular guided reading sessions, pupils explore a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts that are matched to their reading ability.

During Bug Club Guided lessons, children:

• Read and discuss high-quality texts in small groups or as a whole class.
• Develop fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills.
• Learn to retrieve information, make inferences and explain their ideas using evidence from the text.
• Build confidence in discussing books and sharing their opinions.
• Experience a diverse range of authors, genres and themes.

Teachers use targeted questioning and discussion to deepen understanding and encourage children to think critically about what they read. Lessons are carefully sequenced to ensure progression in reading skills across the school.

Our aim is for every child to develop a love of reading, become an enthusiastic reader and acquire the skills needed to access the wider curriculum and succeed in later life.
