Autumn 1

Are roles within our community equally distributed?

Our question for this term of 'Are roles within communities always equally distributed?' will be explored through the Catholic Social Teaching lense of Family and Community across the curriculum.

In EBL we will explore this through being historians. We will be building on our prior learning from year four to deepening our history skills; developing a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British local and world history, exploring how the Roman Empire came to an end which led onto the Anglo-Saxons creating their own settlements around Britain- particularly exploring the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms that were established. We will explore who the Scots and Anglo-Saxons were, where they came from and why they chose to settle in Britain, as well as what life was like in an Anglo-Saxon village, the jobs they did and the clothes that they wore. We will use a range of sources and research to inform our knowledge and will explore the similarities and differences between the Anglo-Saxon culture, other historical culture and our modern day culture.

The children will use this knowledge at the end of the unit to analyse and write a summary about the different roles of the Anglo Saxons in hierarchy from a secondary source photograph. Children will be encouraged to hare their own ideas or experiences throughout this term, continually building upon our skills and knowledge. Therefore, our 'golden nuggets' of knowledge will be embedded in our long-term memories.
