Reading for Pleasure

At OLSK, we believe that reading for pleasure is one of the most important ways children can develop a lifelong love of learning. When children choose to read books, magazines, comics, newspapers or other texts that interest them, they improve their vocabulary, imagination, knowledge and confidence while developing positive attitudes towards reading.

Reading for pleasure helps children to:

  • Develop a richer vocabulary and stronger communication skills.
  • Improve their reading fluency and comprehension.
  • Build creativity, imagination and curiosity.
  • Increase concentration and focus.
  • Enhance wellbeing through relaxation and enjoyment.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
  • Foster a lifelong love of reading and learning.

How We Promote Reading for Pleasure

Free Read Friday

Every Friday, children are invited to bring in their own reading materials from home to enjoy during designated reading times. This may include books, comics, magazines, newspapers or age-appropriate information texts. Free Read Friday encourages children to make independent reading choices and share their enthusiasm for reading with others.

3pm Story Time

At 3pm each day, every class enjoys a dedicated story time. Teachers read high-quality texts aloud to their classes, allowing children to experience the joy of being immersed in a story, discover new authors and genres, and develop a deeper appreciation of literature. Children get to vote for their new book so everyone gets a chance to hear something that they will enjoy.

Reading Corners

Every classroom has a welcoming reading corner stocked with a range of engaging and diverse texts. These inviting spaces encourage children to pick up a book, discover new interests and enjoy reading independently or with friends throughout the school day.

School Library

Our school library is at the heart of our reading culture. Children have regular opportunities to visit the library, browse a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and borrow books to enjoy at home. The library helps children develop independence as readers and supports them in finding books that match their interests and reading needs.

Through these initiatives, we aim to create a vibrant reading community where every child can develop a love of reading and experience the pleasure, excitement and opportunities that books can bring.
