What does Pathways to Write provide?

At our school, we use Pathways to Write, a high‑quality writing programme created by The Literacy Company. The scheme supports children from Year 2 to Year 6 in becoming confident, skilled and enthusiastic writers. It is built around engaging, high‑quality texts and follows a clear, structured approach that helps children make strong progress in vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills.

1. High‑quality texts in every unit

Each unit is based on an exciting and carefully chosen book. These texts help inspire children’s ideas, build vocabulary, and make writing meaningful.

2. Six fully planned units per year

From Year 2 to Year 6, children study six units of work each year. Each unit lasts 4–6 weeks and includes all the lesson plans, resources and teaching slides teachers need.

3. A mastery approach to writing

Key grammar and writing skills are taught, practised, and revisited throughout the year. Children complete short pieces of writing to practise new skills, followed by a final extended piece at the end of each unit.

4. Clear progression from Year 2 to Year 6

The scheme ensures that writing skills build year by year, with no gaps or unnecessary repetition. This helps all children move forward confidently as writers.

5. Support for all children

Units include guidance for supporting pupils who need extra help, as well as extension challenges for pupils working at greater depth.

6. High‑quality teacher support

Teachers benefit from detailed plans, modelled writing examples, PowerPoints, training videos and ongoing support from The Literacy Company. This helps ensure consistent, high‑quality teaching across school.

What This Looks Like in the Classroom (Y2–Y6)

Across Years 2 to 6, children experience:

  • Engaging lessons based on rich and varied books
  • Daily opportunities to practise grammar, vocabulary and sentence skills
  • Short‑burst writing to build confidence
  • A final extended piece at the end of each unit to apply everything they’ve learned

By Year 6, pupils are well prepared for secondary school writing: they understand how to structure different types of texts, choose vocabulary for effect, and use grammar accurately and confidently.
