Spring 1

Spring 1- Dignity of the Human Person & Solidarity of the Common Good

How can we use our voices to bring about justice and unity?

Our enquiry question for this half term of 'How can we use our voices to bring about justice and unity?' will be explored through the Catholic Social Teaching lense of Solidarity of the Common Good and Dignity of the Human Person across the curriculum.

Through our History topic we will become historians, exploring how past events have helped shape the e world at local, national, and global level. We will be building on our prior learning from year four to deepening our history skills; developing a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British local and world history, exploring what life was like in Tudor England.

This curriculum aims to deepen pupils’ historical understanding of the Tudor period while developing their moral, social, and spiritual awareness through the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. By studying key events, figures, and social conditions of Tudor England, pupils will explore how power, faith, and society shaped people’s lives and examine these through the lens of human dignity, justice, and the common good.

Pupils will investigate how Tudor rulers, laws, and religious changes affected different groups in society, particularly the poor, marginalised, and vulnerable. Through Catholic Social Teaching, learners will consider questions of fairness, responsibility, and moral leadership, reflecting on how principles such as the dignity of the human person, solidarity, the common good, and preferential option for the poor were upheld or challenged during this period.

The curriculum encourages pupils to make meaningful connections between past and present by evaluating historical actions and decisions against Catholic values. In doing so, pupils will develop critical thinking, empathy, and a sense of social responsibility, helping them to understand how historical study can inform contemporary issues of justice, faith, and community life.
