Spring 1

How does Jesus show us how to love everyone?- Dignity of the Human Person & Solidarity and The Common Good
Gospel Virtues: Curious & Active
British Values: Individual Liberty

Our question for this term is: “How does Jesus show us how to love everyone?” We will explore this question across the curriculum through the Catholic Social Teaching values of Dignity of the Human Person & Solidarity and the Common Good.

In History, we will be historians investigating the question “How have toys changed?” Children will build on their prior learning about changes within living memory and develop history skills such as: using words and phrases about the past, asking and answering questions, finding out about the past from stories and pictures, and recognising that the past can be represented in different ways.

We will explore toys from long ago and compare them with the toys we play with today. Children will learn how toys have changed over time because of new materials, technology, and people’s ideas. They will think about how toys were made and used by different children in the past and how they are used today, and will practise making comparisons between past and present.

Through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching, we will reflect on how caring for others and sharing toys shows respect for the dignity of every person, and how playing and learning together demonstrates solidarity and the common good.

By the end of the unit, children will be able to compare toys from the past and present, understand why toys have changed, and think about how the past helps us understand the world we live in today. Throughout the unit, children will be encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, and make connections to their own lives—developing curiosity and remembering their ‘golden nuggets’ of knowledge.
