Intent, Implementation & Impact

OLSK – KS2 French - Intent, Implementation and Impact Statement.

Intent

At OLSK we want our children to be active and enthusiastic in their language learning.  We encourage them to use their language skills to communicate with others in practical situations and to discover more about life and people in other countries. Our children are taking their first steps on a language adventure; we want to inspire them and equip them with the language skills they need to take them to whichever destination they choose. Our French curriculum offers carefully planned units of work which ensure coverage of the skills required by the national curriculum.  A linear curriculum has been chosen so that children can gradually build on their skills; they are encouraged to revise and reuse the skills and vocabulary they have already learnt. In every unit of work, children from Year 3 to Year 6 are given opportunities to listen, respond, speak, read and write in French as well as learning about it’s grammar.  We aim to expose children to authentic French including and to provide support material to help every child to access the curriculum.

Implementation

Our units of work are designed to give children a strong basic French vocabulary, an awareness of French pronunciation and the core building blocks of sentence making.  Each unit of work has an average of 6 lessons which are sequenced so that prior learning is taken into consideration, a limited range of new vocabulary is introduced, practised and used to express personal thoughts or feelings.  There are opportunities to master their vocabulary and language skills through reasoning activities and all units have an end of unit writing task.

Impact

As the children progress through these units of work, we want them to become more confident speakers and communicators in the French language – to be able to answer a range of questions about themselves, read and use French for practical purposes and to be well prepared for their continuing language journey as they move to KS3.  They will be supported by well-prepared resources and unit markers containing key vocabulary and signposting key skills.  Children will show that they are making progress by completing an independent task in every unit and reviewing their own key skills. We aim to teach 4 main French topics per year including opportunities to learn about French culture and traditions; there is an optional 5th unit to consolidate skills at the end of each year.  We learn through games, songs and language activities to master core vocabulary, verb phrases and MFL language skills, as outlined by the National Curriculum.
