Our question for this term is: “Would you prefer to live in a hot or cold place?” We will be exploring this through the Catholic Social Teaching lens of Stewardship of God’s Creation, thinking carefully about how we can care for the wonderful world that God has given us.
In Geography, we will be geographers, exploring different places around the world and comparing what it is like to live in hot and cold environments. We will build on our prior learning from Year 1 by developing our geographical skills, including: identifying and describing physical and human features of places; using maps, globes and atlases to locate countries and continents; understanding weather patterns and climates; and comparing how people adapt to different environments.
We will investigate what life is like for people who live in very hot or very cold places—how they find food, build homes, travel, and enjoy their surroundings. As we learn, we will reflect on how people use and care for the natural resources in these different climates, and how we can all be good stewards of God’s creation by looking after our planet and making choices that help protect it for the future.
At the end of the unit, the children will bring together everything they have learned to answer our big question, thinking carefully about the similarities and differences between hot and cold places, and which environment they would prefer to live in—and why.
Throughout our study, children will be encouraged to ask questions, share their own ideas and experiences, and make connections between their learning and the wider world. They will deepen their curiosity about the diversity of God’s world, while developing a sense of responsibility for caring for it as thoughtful global citizens.
