Autumn 1

What can I do to help everyone feel like they belong? - Family & Community
Gospel Virtues: Eloquent & Truthful
British Values: Democracy

This half term in Year 1, our learning is rooted in the Catholic Social Teaching theme of Family and Community, guided by the question: “What can I do to help everyone feel like they belong?” Throughout the term, we will reflect on what it means to be part of a family, a class, and a wider community. Through shared stories, discussions, and classroom experiences, we will explore how kindness, respect, and inclusion help everyone feel valued and connected.

As historians, the children will explore the unit ‘How am I making history?’ They will learn that their own lives are part of history and develop skills such as using historical vocabulary, sequencing key events in their lives, comparing past and present experiences, and asking simple questions about the past. They will think about how they have changed since they were babies, how they celebrate special occasions, and how their family stories shape who they are.

By the end of the unit, the children will create a class timeline using photographs of themselves as babies, toddlers, and now, helping them to understand the concept of chronological order. They will bring in a memory box or an item from home to share with their peers, giving them the opportunity to reflect on their personal history and build connections with others. The unit will conclude with a class celebration display, showcasing the children's unique stories and how they are already making history. This learning journey will support them in recognising their own identity, appreciating others, and understanding the importance of helping everyone feel like they belong.
