Year 1

Who are the Year 1 teachers?

  • Miss Harris – Class Teacher
  • Mrs Knipe – Teaching Assistant (AM)
  • Mrs Banno – Teaching Assistant (PM)
  • Mrs Nixon – PPA Cover and Art & DT Teacher

Timetabling

Children in Year 1 will begin school at 8.45am and finish at 3.00pm (if your child has a sibling in KS2, they will both start school at 8.45am and finish at 3pm).

How will we support the transition from EYFS?

It is priority that we ensure our children can return to school feeling safe and reassured as we begin our journey into the new school year in such uncertain times. Given the current circumstances and the closure of schools before the summer, we will be doing everything we can to ensure your children are supported in their transition up to Year 1. The transition will be managed very carefully to ensure that all children are secure in the Early Learning Goals before moving on to the Year 1 National Curriculum.

Take a look at the photos of the Year 1 Classroom below. The classroom layout has been designed in a way to provide a learning environment similar to Reception class, so that it feels familiar for the children.

Rewards and Sanctions

This year we will be replacing the current house point system with ‘Class Dojo’ to reward children points for showing gospel values, contributing in lessons and working well with others.

Just like in Reception class, we use the Rainbow, Sun and Cloud behaviour system in Year 1. Each child will start every day on the Sun and will aim to be moved up to the Rainbow by demonstrating good behaviour in order to earn Class Dojos. Should your child show unkind behaviour or fail to follow the school rules, they will be moved onto the Cloud and given a warning. If this behaviour continues they will be moved onto the Thunder Cloud, given a time out and parents will be informed.

Website

The Year 1 class page on the school website will celebrate the children’s learning with photographs. There will also be updates and information for parents on this page so please make sure you check the page regularly.

PE

Children will have PE on Wednesdays (Pupils come to school in PE Kit) and Fridays (Pupils to bring kit to school).

Phonics Screening

In June, all children in Year 1 will sit their Phonics screening test. This will involve the children using the sounds they have learnt in phonics lessons to decode and read a range of real words and 'alien' words (made up words). The work we are doing in Read Write Inc. throughout the year will be preparing the children for their Phonics Screening Test. We will provide you with more information regarding this nearer the time.

Homework & Reading

At the start of September, your child will be sent home with a reading book and a reading record. It is essential that your child reads their book each night at home, as this will have a huge impact on their reading progress and chances of passing the phonics screening test at the end of the year. We will encourage children to change their reading book regularly, but it will be their responsibility to do this.

Every Friday, your child will bring home a set of words to learn to spell, ready for their spelling test the following week. Throughout the year, they may also bring home additional homework (Maths or Research Questions), but we will make you aware of any changes to homework as they occur.

Thank you for reading! If you have any queries/questions, do not hesitate to get in touch.
