When we think of teaching and learning, an image of a teacher standing over pupils in a classroom springs to mind. Forest school offers the chance to take learning out of the classroom and into the great outdoors. Children are given an opportunity to learn in a new way and within a new environment. Reception will be adventuring into forest school once a week, starting the third full week at school.
Forest school allows children to take risks and attempt new challenges they would not face in a classroom. There are opportunities for children to try more risky activities such as tree climbing and building dens. This adds a sense of excitement and adventure for the children, who are free to explore and manipulate the environment around them using all of their senses.
The weather has no impact upon our forest school session, whether it be rain or shine, snow or winds, the children will be outside making the most of the experience. Therefore the children will need a pair of wellies, with their name in, to be kept in school at all times. We have waterproofs at school for the children, however we may sometimes ask for children to come into school wearing old clothes. We will let you know in advance if old, scruffy clothes are need.
The environment in which forest school takes place is risk assessed on a daily basis and a high number of adults will be around to supervise and to ensure safety is paramount.
